A Study on the Relationship Between Depression and Stress, Authoritarian Caring Attitude, and Acceptance of Cultural Diversity in Multicultural Adolescents

The purpose of this study was to identify the correlation factors related to depression among adolescents from multicultural families. The participants were 211 adolescents from multicultural families. The data were collected using a self-report questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using correlation analysis with the SPSS/WIN 20.0 program. The mean age of the participants was 15.8 years, with 112 (53.12%) of them being female. The level of depression was 2.62 (±0.85) points (ranging 1-5) and the stress was 2.53 (±0.82); the authoritarian caring attitude was 2,75 (±0.81); and the acceptance of cultural diversity was 3.66 (±0.79). In correlation analysis, depression was significantly correlated with stress (r=-.55, p<.001), acceptance of cultural diversity (r=.25, p<.001), and authoritarian caring attitude (r= .42, p<.001). This study demonstrated the necessity of stress control and the importance of a caring attitude and diversity acceptance attitude in depression intervention of multicultural adolescents. The result also provided basic data for the the development of a nursing intervention program.
